The agency’s move comes after two separate groups of drug-releasing companies — Express Scripts and United Therapeutics — announced they would no longer produce non-prescription Nuvigil for sale within 60 days.
The FDA’s move to ban the drug does not go into effect immediately. The agency will keep monitoring patients who have already taken it according to federal rules and, once the drug is no longer prescribed, will consider recommending it be removed from the market.
